Abstract

The water content of finely powdered polypyrrolidone is reduced, and the bulk density increased, by compressing material with a water content of 5-60, pref. 10-30, wt. % at between 50 degrees C and its m.pt. pref. 100-200 degrees C, to 3.515-21.1kg/cm2. This gives a solid with a dry (i.e. 1 wt. % water) bulk density of 0.3-0.8, pref. 0.48-0.8g/cm3. The compression is pref. effected by extrusion through a pulveriser to give a ground or granulated product. The process enables polypyrrolidone to be melt spun to fibres, pref. after the water content has been reduced to 0.5-1 wt. %. Ordinarily, because of its low density, this cannot be done unless, e.g., the polypyrrolidone has first been melt extruded to form granules, but this, unlike the new process, causes a loss in mole wt.
