Abstract
The ratio of fuel consumed to distance travelled for a vehicle depends on the vehicle and manner in which it is driven. A numerical display of the ratio enables the driver to look quickly at causes of variations such as deflated tyres or faulty carburation. The consumption sensor comprises a glass tube (11) mounted vertically between the petrol pump and carburretor. An endless screw (12) of material which is of lower density than the petrol is attached to a central shaft (13) and is driven by fuel flow. A lamp (16) and phototransistor (17) detect screw rotation to produce an electrical waveform used as a time base for a speed sensor. The speed sensor comprises a disc with holes which is rotated by the speedometer cable to produce electrical pulses. Electronic circuits combine consumption and speed signals to provide indication of the fuel consumption.
