Abstract
Floats are constructed a rigid sealed envelopes partly or totally filled with a core of low density closed cell foam pref. contained within an intermediate flexible impermeable sleeve. Suitable for floats prefabricated or made in situ for supporting floating hoses, oil confinement booms, pendant nets, etc. Pref. the core is of polyurethane or polystyrene foam expanded in situ in a sleeve of flexible nylon film fitted into a metal jacket made from spirally wound and welded or brazed strip. The jacket may also enclose ballast, e.g. for vertical floats, or may comprise an annular form, to surround a hose, or may have one or more oblique ends, for use as pontoons. The combination of a closed cell foam and a flexible sheath inhibits flooding, contamination or abrasion if the external jacket becomes damaged.
