Abstract

The detection of breaks in electrical conductors is by measurement of the characteristics of the current in the current in the conductor. The detection is based on the use of a reed relay (N-M) with two or three separate coils wound together (L1, L2, L3). Two such coils (L1, L2) are fed in opposition via rectifying diodes (D1, D2) from the line voltage (E) such that there is normally a positive or relay closed field around the relay. The two windings are finally commoned (S) and taken into the load circuit. A further coil (L3) can be included, this having short circuited terminals ensuring that the relay electrodes normally remain closed. High power lines can be accommodated by use of a suitable low power transformer about 0-2VA at the detector input.
