Abstract

The device is for the measurement of backward diffused light in optical fibres esp. for determination of attenuation in communications networks. The light source is a laser whose output passes through a collimating SELFOC (RTM) lens to a Glan filter (6). This is coupled to an optical fibre (8) via a second SELFOC (RTM) lens 50% of the polarised light reflected from the far end (13) of the fibre is deflected in the filter towards a detector (12) via a focussing lens (14). The detected levels allows attenuation to be deduced from a curve of light level against length of fibre.
