Abstract

Removal of oil spills from beaches is effected by spreading over the polluted sand or soil a powdered oil-sequestering and/or oil-retaining material (I) which rapidly hardens in the presence of sea water. The resulting sheet of hardened material is then removal in fragments to leave a clean surface. The fragments are reduced to granules which are burned as fuel, and the resulting hydrocarbon-free ash is ground and re-used as a soil-improver for heavy clay soils. (I) is pref. a hydraulic cement based on alpha and/or beta Ca sulphate semihydrate or alpha and/or beta anhydrite, opt. mixed with organic materials such as peat, sawdust or coal dust. It is pref. worked into the oil layer without incorporating large amts. of sand. Claimed appts. for applying (I) comprises a height-adjustable wheeled spreader pulled by a tractor. A hopper at the front of the spreader feeds the material to a transverse screw conveyor, which distributes it over the ground. A paddle-type beater at the rear of the spreader works the material into the oil layer.
