Abstract

A fire-proofing system for rigid or flexible synthetic foams, partic. rigid polyurethane foams, contains (1) >=1 phosphonate-nitrile cpd. of general formula (R1O)(R2O)-P(=O)-(CHR)nC=N (R1 and R2 are opt. branched 2-12C alkyl; R3 is H or 1-3C alkyl; n is 2-4); (2) Sb2O3; (3) a chlorinated or brominated hydrocarbon, pref. a brominated aliphatic alcohol. Pref. the elemental proportions are 0.1-2 (pref. 0.2-1.6) wt.% P, 2-7 (pref. 2.9-5.5) wt.% Sb and 7-11 (pref. 8-10) wt.% Br or 3-5 (pref. 3.5-4.5) wt.% Cl. The system provides better fire-proofing than that obtd. with known compsns. of the same type. Partic., the system consists of diethyl phosphono 3 propionitrile, Sb2O3 and 2,3-dibromopropanol.
