Abstract

New acetals (I) formed between benzopyran glycosides (II) and certain carbonyl cpds. (III) are claimed. Cpds. (III) comprise 5-8C cycloalkanones, 2-adamantanone, 1-decalone, 2-decalone, and cpds. of formula R1COR2 (where R1 and R2 are H, alkyl or opt. substd. phenyl, but are not both H). Cpds. (I) reduce capillary fragility and have anti-inflammatory activity. They also act as aldose reductase inhibitors at lower concns. than their parent glycosides (II), and are thus useful for treating diabetic cataracts. A typical cpd. (I) is rutin acetonide. In an example, this is prepd. by reacting rutin with acetone in DMF in the presence of methyl chloroformate.
