Abstract

The distance and speed of a boat are determined from log trailing by a cable from the boat to rotate the blades for the indicator. Comparison of its shaft angle with compass bearing provides accurate distance measurement. A shaft for the helix extends through the casing of a cylindrical body. The shaft pivots around an axis to extend to the axis of the body. A spring maintains the shaft horizontal. A small cylindrical magnet with poles passes intermediate pole piece to induce alternating flux proportional to boat speed in a coil. A lamp and photocell on a vertical shaft act as transducer permitting transmission of angles to galvanometer for comparison with compass bearing.
