Abstract

The lift of an aircraft wing is considerably increased at low speeds by dividing the wing into two parts which are joined by a hinge extending from the fuselage to the wing tip. The hinge is actuated by hydraulic or electric power so that the camber of the wing is increased during take-off and landing. The performance of the wing is still further improved by the addition of flaps along the trailing edge. These devices delay the onset of stall by maintaining the boundary layer flow at low speeds.
