Abstract

The tube is rotated while a metal strip is wound in a helix on the outer surface of the tube; and a roller exerts pressure on the strip so it forms a helical groove in the periphery of the tube while being welded onto the tube. Welding is achieved by feeding electric current through the point of contact of the strip with the tube, the current being of low radio frequency, esp. 50-120 kHz. In the pref. machine, the tube is rotated on its horizontal axis while a trolley is driven along the tube. The trolley carries a magazine contg. the metal strip and also a guide and pressure roller forming the helix. The trolley is also fitted with a pair of skids carrying the electric current and running by friction on the strip and the tube near their point of contact. High speed prodn. of finned tube for industrial boilers etc. is provided.
