Abstract

The autoclave has ribs extending radially outwards and the door has ribs extending radially inwards which on rotation come under the ribs of the autoclave or between them for opening. The ribs of the autoclave have a portion of less thickness than the rest so that the door can be parted a little under internal pressure from the autoclave, without becoming open. The door has teeth disposed axially under corresp. teeth fixed to the autoclave. When the door is thus parted from the autoclave under the effect of the pressure, the teeth become overlapped so that further rotation is prevented. When the pressure is high, the operator cannot open the door manually, but many doors have jacks or other means of assisting opening. Even when the internal pressure is low, it can be high enough to cause accidents if the door is opened before the pressure has completely fallen.
