Abstract
Clean synthesis gas is prepd. by (1) gasifying an opt. oxygenated hydrocarbon fuel by partial oxidn. with an O2-contg. gas in a free-flow non-catalytic gasifier at 700-1650 degrees C and 1-250 atm., (2) dividing the effluent gas into 2 streams, (3) cooling the 1st stream by indirect heat exchange, removing entrained particles and drying the gas, (4) purifying the gas from (3) to remove at least one of CO2, H2S, COS, CH4, and NH3 and form a clean synthesis gas free of S cpds. Process further comprises (5) dividing the gas from (4) into 2 streams and introducing the 1st stream into a CO-sepn. zone to form a CO-rich gas and an H2-rich gas, (6) cooling and scrubbing the 2nd gas stream from (2) by direct contact with H2O to form a gas with an H2O/CO molar ratio of 2-5, (7) subjecting the gas from (6) to shift conversion to produce an H2-rich gas, (8) drying and purifying the gas from (7) to produce a clean H2-rich gas, and (9) mixing (part of) the 2nd synthesis gas stream from (5) with 0-100% of the H2-rich gas from (5) and with (part of) the H2-rich gas from (8) to produce a clean synthesis gas. Methanol is synthesised as above, with the following modifications: (i) step (2), the 2nd stream makes up 20-70 vol % of the total, (ii) step (5) is omitted, (iii) in step (9), (part of) the clean synthesis gas from (4) is mixed with (part of) the H2-rich gas from (8), (iv) the gas from (9) is contacted with a suitable catalyst at 200-400 degrees C and 40-350 atm. to produce methanol. The CO-rich gas produced can be used for acetic acid mfr.
