Abstract

The treatment of liq. metal in baths for e.g. degasification of the metal involves the use of a non-atmospheric conditions and electric arc heating using permanent electrodes heated by an alternating current. The treatment involves the use of an appts. having a gas-tight chamber with an upper part on which several electrode advance mechanisms are positioned, the mechanisms being controlled by pressurised fluid. The mechanisms comprise jacks formed of a cylinder, piston and rod which is electrically and/or mechanically connected with a corresp. permanent electrode. At least one support element is located outside the cylinder of each jack upon the upper part of the chamber, the element being secured to the piston rod. The cylinder is movable relative to the piston and is axially guided for movement through the upper part of the chamber to enter the chamber. The lower end of the cylinder has an attachment to which a permanent electrode can be secured. The electrodes are positioned without producing large forces tending to make them vibrate and possibly fracture so that the electrodes even when subjected to high voltages last longer than in conventional degasification devices.
