Abstract

The initial glass lens blank has a flat lower surface (a), and a sphero-convex upper surface (b) which is prepolished; the blank also tapers in thickness across its dia. The blank is placed on top of a template made of ceramic or other refractory with a low coefft. of thermal expansion, and heated 4 hrs. at 650 degrees C, so surface (a) sags to assume the profile of the template and thus becomes concave. The convex upper surface (b) is polished, and the thickness of the glass is adjusted to obtain a lens with a progressive alteration in dioptres in the lower, circular zone used for reading etc. Improved focussing in the close range zone of the lens is obtd.
