Abstract

The process comprises continuously introducing under pressure into a multi-filiform current of sodium alignate soln. a current of aq. calcium chloride soln. The calcium alginate fibres resulting are recovered in the form of ranges of successive parallel fibres which are entrained in a continuous movement during which they are sprayed with pure water and then alcohol, followed by draining and drying. The process is carried out in an appts. comprising a tube contg. a spinneret into which is directed the sodium alginate and linked to this is a calcium chloride soln feed. The assembly is mounted in a manner such that a horizontal to-and-fro movement is imparted to the exit of the tube where the fibres leave. The tube delivers onto a perforated continuous belt which passes over the vessels which collect the drainings and washings from the fibres with the appropriate spraying arrangement above each. The process is cheaper enabling automation and the product obtd. is uniform.
