Abstract

Sepn. of solid wax particles from a suspension in hydrocarbon oil is effected by filtration through a needled felt filter cloth made of fibres that can be melted with a flame. The cloth has a singed and sintered surface with a r.m.s. surface roughness of >12.7 (pref. >20.3) r.m.s. mu m and a fouling factor of >75%. The process is esp. useful for dewaxing lubricating oils in drum filters. The singed felt material is less susceptible to "blinding" (blockage by wax particles) than conventional woven fabrics over a wide range of filtration rates.
