Abstract

The fluid is circulated, e.g. by a pump, at a pre-determined speed and in a fixed direction, and the filtering element is mounted in series in the flow channel of the fluid with its surface parallel to the flow direction. The element is pref. disposed horizontally in the upper part of a chamber into which the filtrate can pass. The device pref. forms a closed circuit contg. a tank for the fluid to be filtered, the pump, and the chamber with the filtering element, connected in series by pipes. The fluid is repeatedly circulated and filtrate continuously withdrawn from the chamber, whose level, in the case of liqs. is maintained below the element. The device can be used equally for liqs. and for gases, contaminated with suspended matter. By passing the fluid across the face of the filtering element, the element is continuously swept free of the contaminants, avoiding the risk of clogging of the element, with consequent reduction in efficiency. The fluid is gradually concentrated in its contaminant content, permitting its easy disposal.
