Abstract
A hot air ballon has an inner envelope (2) surrounded by inflatable flexible tubes (1) which hold the inner envelope to a spherical form. An electrical heating element (3) is fitted inside the inner envelope (2) and is initially supplied with current from an external battery (5). When the air had been heated sufficiently to enable the balloon to ascend, an internal battery (8) supplies current to make good thermal losses during flight. These losses are very low since the inflated external tubes (1) also provide effective thermal insulation.
