Abstract

The automatic machine bores axial holes in pairs of parallel round bars (12), being used in the mfr. of gun barrels etc. and utilising the relative movement of two parallel horizontal racks to feed bars, to and past the machining post. Each rack comprises two beams with 'V' notches at uniform centres in their top edges, one being fixed and the other cantilevering from rotating cranked shafts (70, 71). The notches locate and align the bars normal to the racks, those of the moving rack (62) following circular trajectories (90) to lift, advance and deposit the series of bars relative to the fixed rack (60). Jacks are used to push pairs of bars from the magazine (15) onto the fixed rack.
