Abstract

Coating compsns. contg. as cationic film-former a mixt. of (A) a reaction prod. of (a) Mannich bases free from epoxy gps. from (a1) condensed phenols with at least 2 aromatic rings and 2 phenolic OH gps., free from ether gps., (a2) condensed phenols with >=2 aromatic rings and one phenolic OH gp., contg. ether gps. (a3) sec. amines with 1 hydroxyalkyl gp. opt. mixed with (a4) sec. dialkyl or dialkoxyalkyl amines without free OH gps. and (a5) HCHO or cpds. liberating HCHO, with (b) epoxy resins, (in which aliphatic OH gps. from (a) or (b) are opt. converted to urethane gps. by reaction with partially blocked isocyanates, (B) a low-molecular epoxy cpd. with at least one epoxide gp. per molecule and epoxide equiv. 80-1200, and/or (C) blocked mono- or poly-isocyanates with mol. wt. below 2000. Used for electrophoretic coating of conductive substrates, esp. metals. Amines liberated from (A) during storing react with (B) and/or (C) to form very non-volatile cpds. contg. reactive gps., which become incorporated in the film, thus reducing pollution by exhaust fumes from the oven. Penetration of the deposited film is improved, and the films have high hardness and solvent resistance.
