Abstract

Lightweight rails for supporting the ends of transverse rods are made by encasing two parallel resin impregnated roving in layers of glass or fabric consolidated to form a thin dense web linking the rovings. The resulting 'I'-beam profile is resin-impregnated, pref. under pressure prior to pultrusion via a shaped die. The profile is pref. enclosed in an integral glass fabric sheath. The solid central web provides more solid support than the skin of a conventional foam-filled hollow GRP beam of equiv. mass and stiffness. Esp. suitable for supports for power cables, mines services, etc. where the rails are required to be rot-proof, wear-resistant non-sparking, insulating and/or antistatic.
