Abstract

The invention relates to a crystalline alpha alumina monohydrate useful in particular as a support for a catalyst and its method of preparation. The process for preparing the alumina according to the invention comprises the following steps: a. an aqueous solution of an alumina salt having an Al2 O3 concentration of about 5 to 9% by weight and a temperature of about 54 to 71 degrees C is added to water at a temperature of about 60 at 77 degrees C, said solution being added in an amount sufficient to adjust the pH of the mixture to about 2-5; b. a further quantity of aluminum salt is added to the mixture by simultaneously adding, but separately, an aqueous solution of an alkali metal aluminate having an Al2 O3 concentration of about 18 to 22% by weight and a temperature of about 54 to 71 degrees C to precipitate the alumina and form an alumina slurry, raising the pH of the mixture to a value in the range of about 7 to about 8; vs. maintaining the pH of the suspension between about 7 and about 8, the temperature of the suspension between about 60 and 82 degrees C and an addition rate of the aluminum salt solution and the alkali metal aluminate solution to precipitate a boehmite-pseudobochmite intermediate; d. adjusting the pH of the suspension to between about 9.5 and about 10.5; summer. the suspension is filtered and the filter cake washed.
