Abstract
At least part of the surface of the electrode comprises >=1 intermetallic cpds. (IMC) with general formula AxBy; where A=Be, Al, Sc, Y, a lanthanide, Si, Ti, Zr, Hf, Th, V, Nb or Ta; and B=Ru, Pd, Ir, or Pt, and where x and y are >=1, esp. where x+y=5 max. The electrode may employ a mixt. of two or more IMC and/or at least part of its working surface may be coated with one or more of the IMC specified above, esp. using a coating 2-15 mu m thick. A pref. device for igniting a mixt. of combustible gases consists of two or more of the above electrodes sepd. by an insulator o a semiconductor material, where sparks travel between the exposed working surfaces of the electrodes. Used e.g. in spraking plugs for aero-engines; snow vehicles, chain saws, etc. The electrodes have longer life and lower cost than Ru which is one conventional material used in high duty sparking plugs.
