Abstract

The protection of electrodes in an electric arc furnace includes measuring the magnitude of the force applied to the electrode conrol system. This allows the detection of any resistance occurring at the moment when the electrodes come into mechanical contact with a solid, non-conducting part of the furnace charge. The force is measured using the pressure of fluid in a hydraulic cylinder incorporated in the electrode positioning system. An electrohydraulic or electromechanical system provides the necessary counteracting force to prevent damage to the electrodes, when they come into contat with solid objects in the charge.
