Abstract

The drilling head (11) for an earth drill, incorporates three branches (15) each conical in shape, and carrying rings of tungsten carbide cutter inserts (18, 21, 24, 25). Each branch rotates about a spindle (14) mounted in the head, at an angle such that the side of each cone is forced against the bottom of the hole during boring. The largest dia. ring of inserts (24) projects furthest sideways, so as to determine the size of the hole being bored. This ring has a dia. which is 10% or 15% greater than the next ring of cutting inserts (25). Due to the slope of the cones, a flat face is cut at the bottom of the borehole.
