Abstract

A flexible element loaded with lead for protection against radiation, and esp. a glove, has zones of different thickness. Whilst protection is adequate, in the case of a glove in particular, it can be made light weight, the sense of touch is maintained and manipulation is easier. To produce it, a mould is immersed in a bath of plastigel cont. a dispersion of the necessary quantity of lead oxide and PVC powder. The layer obtd. is gelled in a stove and is cut away in the zones where the protective layer may be of redued thickness. The mould is then immersed in the bath again and the second layer is gelled; the process being repeated until the desired final thickness is reached. Pref. the bath is degasified under vacuum and contains colloidal silica and a plasticiser.
