Abstract

A composite wall resistant to both fire or to drilling comprises a metal plate backed by a layer of tough rubber or plastic material, applied as a cast coating and mechanically keyed to the metal plate. Used for building or lining safes, vaults, etc. to resist thermal or mechanical damage or penetration. The cast layer may be altex, pref. polychloroprene, or a thermoplastic resin, viz. PVC, polybutadiene or polyurethane. The cast layer may contain fillers such as granulated rubber, silica, emery, bitumen, carbon fibres or steel pins. The structure may be reinforced with a metal grille.
