Abstract

Disposable nappies consist of an underlay which is impermeable to moisture, an absorbent cushion positioned on this, and a cover on top, have on each end a band forming a pocket for the absorbent cushion. They are produced by drawing from a roll the impermeable underlay, applying to it a pattern in glue, and laying on absorbent cushions at definite spacings between them. A continuous covering layer of moisture-permeable material is deposited on the cushions, and beneath the permeable layer strips of reinforcing material, which partly overlap the absorbent cushions, are placed. The permeable covering layer is bonded at its edges and ends to the impermeable layer, and the band formed in this way is double-folded lengthways and finally cut into separate disposable diapers. The reinforcement is esp. EVA copolymer contg. 5-10 % vinyl acetate. Before the reinforcing strips are laid on, the permeable covering layer is brought into contact at spacing corresp. to the length of a diaper, with a continuous web of reinforcing material. In this operation, the covering layer moves at constant speed whilst the reinforcement moves at varying speed. The two webs are spot welded and with the reinforcement held under some tension it is sheared transversely to form strips.
