Abstract

Cellulose fibres, (A), having a high absorption rate and absorption capacity for water or aq. salt solns. consist of long cellulose fibres, (I), present an individual, separate fibres, coated with 15-90 wt.%, w.r.t. total coated fibre wt., of water-insoluble, water-absorbing polymer (II). The use of (A) as blends with untreated, long cellulose fibres, is claimed. Ratio coated: non-coated fibres is such that total concn. of (II) in blend is 15-80 wt.%. Absorbent prods. obtd. can be used as tampons, nappies, bandages, hospital pillows or -inserts. (II) improves absorption properties of (I). Addn. of >50% (II) increases the absorption properties of (I) synergistically, e.g. 50% CMC contg. free acid coated on cotton fibres improved absorption time for a 1% NaCl soln. from 0.8 to 1.5 min. Highly absorbent materials can be obtd. with lower concns. of the more expensive (I).
