Abstract

The bolted and flanged shaft coupling has mutually interlocking grooves on the mating faces of the flanges, increasing the resistance of the coupling to applied torque. The grooves follow circular paths about the axis of the shafts and may be of a trapezoidal or sinusoidal cross-section. The base width (a) of a groove, i.e. equal to the clear internal between grooves, may be from 1 to 5mm. The depth (h) may be between 2 and 10mm, and the inclination of the sides (b) may be between 8 and 16 deg. The grooves may occupy the central zone of the mating faces of the coupling, and may occupy from 20 to 60% of the area of these mating faces.
