Abstract
The manual winding gear may be deployed on automobiles to effect the linear in-plane displacement of two sliding windows. The gear, operated by a crank-handle, effects the displacement of the windows independently of one another and may lock the windows in any required position. The handle rotates a drum traversed by two cable loops(38, 39) to a stationary idling pulley. A cable(38 or 39) is anchored to each window. The drum may incorporate a simple clutch which operates by axial displacement of the winding axle(8), and couples a drive wheel(34) with either of two driven wheels(36, 37). The driven wheel(34) may be fixed to the drive-axle(8) and may be flanked by the two driven wheels(36, 37). The driven wheels do not rotate with the axle at repose, and coil springs maintain their axial relationship with the driven wheel. The perimeters of the wheels have reciprocal toothed formations(33, 35), and the enmeshing of either driven wheel(36) with the drive wheel(34) is effected by displacement of the latter(34) until the teeth(33, 35) interlock. Automatically expanding springs(50, 51) may lock the drum against displacement by moving a window, and the handle may articulate into a push-rod formation.
