Abstract

The rubber spring for the suspension system of a vehicle utilises a mandrel (1) of roughly conical shape surrounded by a "rolling ring" (2) of rubber or other suitable elastomer. The rolling ring fits inside a spherical housing (3) which is supported inside an outer housing (4) by rubber strips (5). By varying the number and size of the rubber strips the lateral stiffness of the spring can be adjusted to produce any required response of the suspension system to lateral forces imposed on the vehicles. This avoids the need for a compromise between vertical and lateral characteristics.
