Abstract

The starter has a gear type compressed air motor with two rotors (9a, 9b). One rotor (9b) meshes directly with the gear (17a) of the starter output shaft (21). The other rotor (9b) meshes with an idler wheel (18) which meshes with the output gear (17a). The shaft carries a pinion which slides axially along it to engage the engine flywheel. Since both rotors drive the output shaft a higher torque can be transmitted without an increase in the width of the gears. Higher pressure air can be used to obtain the higher output torque.
