Abstract

The metal space-frame is for use in roof or floor structures and is built up from modular frames (1, 2, 3) of inverted pyramid form. The bases of the modules align in the top horizontal plane of a composite assembled frame with structural connections (15) made between the corners (3d) of adjacent modules. The apices (3a) of the modules align in a lower horizontal plane and connect to cross-joists (4). The arrangement enables a roof to be assembled module by module at the higher level and obviates differential deflection problems. The joists span a ring frame (5) which in turn spans between the heads of columns (6). The ring frame (5) may be rectangular with joists (4) in a single direction parallel to two opposite sides of the ring frame. Alternatively the joists (4, 12) may form a grid spanning both directions through the apices of the modules (1, 2, 3). The erection sequence entails placing the ring beam (5) and joists (4) initially to provide support for the modules (1, 2, 3). The modules may have linear members forming each edge of the pyramid.
