Abstract

Appts. for drawing an optical fibre from a premoulding, esp. from silicon oxide, includes a mechanism for lowering the premoulding, a furnace, working for pref. by induction, and a drawing drum. There are also devices for regulating the temp. of the furnace and the speed of the mechanism for lowering the premoulding, so that the feed in volume of the premoulding entering the furnace remains constant. The dia. of the fibre produced is monitored by devices arranged on each side of it, and these consist of >=1 light source and a photo-sensitive head on which the beam of light casts the shadow of the fibre. The signal generated is used to control the speed of the drawing drum at least. In the direction of the path followed by the fibre, the photosensitive head or heads extends (extend) over a predetermined distance so that the monitor is not affected by differences at points. Device for starting up the drawing of the fibre automatically which includes on the one hand, means of lowering a primer of the premoulding, behind which there is a primer of the fibre. The device acts in such a way that at the moment the latter reaches the level of the shaft of the drawing drum, it has a vectorial speed equal to the peripheral speed of the drum. An ancillary device acts at that moment to cause the abrupt adhesion of the primer to the drum, and if necessary to cut off the primer below the point of attachment.
