Abstract

Dispositif permettant la modulation de la lumière le traversant et assurant éventuellement le couplage de deux guides d'ondes lumineuses. L'invention concerne plus particulièrement un système de modulation optique à couche mince. Celui-ci comporte une couche de matériau conducteur 3 de la lumière ayant un indice de réfraction supérieur à celui du guide d'ondes 1. Cette couche est biseautée en ses extrémités afin de recevoir la lumière en provenance du guide d'ondes puis de la lui transmettre. Une ou plusieurs électrodes 6 sont situées sur la couche pour permettre l'application de signaux électriques de modulation. Lorsque ce dispositif est utilisé en coupleur, les extrémités des deux guides d'ondes à coupler sont elles-mêmes biseautées et la couche 4 les recouvre au-delà de la région biseautée. L'invention trouve son application par exemple dans les systèmes de télécommunication.
