Abstract

To eliminate infiltrating water from finished coatings, a substance which is hydrophilic, but insol. in water, is incorporated in the coating components, e.g. in the binder or agglomerant. The hydrophilic substance is impregnated, pref. before incorporation in the coating, with 0.1-5% of a material which reduces its rate of wetting by water. The impregnating material can be a saponifiable oil, such as crude linseed oil. NaOH can be added to the saponifiable oil. Alternatively, it can be sodium p-toluene sulphonate, sodium xylene-sulphonate or a polyethylene glycol of intermediate molecular wt. A hygroscopic substance can also be added to the components of the coating, e.g. glycerol, a glycol such as butylglycol or a polyethylene glycol. The method is applicable to glazings, mastic, paint coatings, etc. partic. the walls of underground galleries. The coatings can be based on cement, plaster, asphalt, tar or natural or synthetic non-hydrophilic resins. The incorporation of the hydrophilic substance ensures diffusion of water through the coating and its evapn. on the surface. However, it causes a high coating viscosity. This defect is avoided by impregnating it with the saponified oil, etc.
