Abstract

The mixt. is passed into a tranquillisation vessel where some sepn. takes place, then circulated through an enclosure containing a coalescer medium at such a rate that the flow is between laminar and full turbulent flow. The coalescer medium is made up of sheets of oleophile fibres a few cms. long, e.g. polyester bound by a resin, oriented perpendicular to the flow. One or more plates of the cloth having density of 0.1-10 kg/m2 make up the coalescer mass. After the coalescer is a decanting vessel for sepn. of the phases. In the tranquillisation vessel and decanting vessel, the interface of the 2 sepd. phases is kept above the level of the coalescer. This prevents the upstream and downstream faces of the coalescer from being wetted by the light phase. Used for sepn. of aq. and oily phases, e.g. domestic fuel oil from towns water. System ensures an energetic coalescence and satisfactory sepn. no matter what proportion the phases are in.
