Abstract

The floating barrage is constructed of vertical panels which are coupled by their vertical edges to form a continuous horizontal elongated curtain of variable geometry. The couplings provide for inter-articulation of panels, and the barrier is for use in collecting oil or other pollution-debris from the sea, or for preventing the pollution of selected confined coastal waters. The barrier can be towed by surface shipping or stand freely on the sea bed in shallow waters. The bases of the panels are ballasted and include valves which open automatically to relieve differential water pressure on the panel faces. A combination of integral floats and ballast associated with the couplings maintains the barrier vertical. The couplings may comprise vertical bars with a spherical base for ballast, a radar beacon on the head, and auto-spreading legs attached to the base. The panels may be attached by links to eyelets, and subsidiary stays may be deployed when the barrier stands on the sea-bed.
