Abstract

External inserts for reinforcing blow moulded containers are secured not by interfacial welding but by partial overmoulding of the inserts or sleeves at intervals along the inserts, so that the inserts are free to move relative to the container. The inserts are pref. prestressed in tension so that they will contract in a similar manner to the moulding under the effects of heat and age. Used esp. for incorporating rigid metallic or non-metallic rods as integral stiffeners beneath the base of blow moulded or along the walls of blow moulded storage tanks. The insert mountings allow relative movement to compensate for differential contraction or expansion between insert and mounting without causing buckling or stressing and potential cracking.
