Abstract

Process for continuous steam reforming of hydrocarbons (gaseous or liq. with a final b.pt. of 250 degrees C) or for post-combustion (secondary reforming) of the steam-reformed gases is claimed. The catalyst used comprises 4-25 (pref. 10-20) wt.% of NiO on a support comprising 70-98% MgO (>= 70% of which is uncombined), 2-30% Al2O3 (part of which may be combined with MgO in the form of a spinel), and 0-5% SiO2 (in the form of aluminosilicate). The support particles are in the form of a hollow cylinder contg. 4-7 equally spaced radial partitions. The catalyst produces a smaller pressure drop and has a higher contact area than similar ring-shaped catalysts. It has high activity and good resistance to deactivation.
