Abstract

Medical infusion into a vein which may leak somewhat into the surrounding tissues, is checked for by measuring the skin temperature over the point of the infusion needle, on the basis that the infused liquid is cooler than the skin. A heater or cooler is used where this assumption is not met, e.g. patients in shock, hospitals in the tropics. A temp. regulator alters the patients skin temperature in the neighbourhood of the needle point; a temperature sensor over the needle point feeds a signal to an electronic circuit. There is pref. a second temperature sensor on the kin a little distance away, and also a third on the heater itself. In the tropics, a skin cooler would be used in place of a heater.
