Abstract

Naphthacene derivs. of formula (I) and their salts are new (where R is H or OH; R1 and R2 are each H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, or together form 3-4C alkylene). Also claimed are pharmaceutical compsns. contg. (I) and a suitable diluent. (I) have antitumoural props. and low toxicity. (I) are active at 0.1-5 mg/kg i.p. (mouse) against leukaemia L1210, leukaemia P388 and leucosarcomatosis (I; R=H, R1=CH3, R2=H) (N-citraconyl-daunorubicin) has LD50 (mouse) ca 16mg/kg i.p. and chemotherapeutic index xa 16, (c.f. 6-10 for daunonibicin).
