Abstract

Welding of profiled metal bars and rails is performed in prefabricated moulds or cores of a hard material in which the bars or rails are placed end to end in the moulds which act as molten baths so that the bars or rails are end-welded. The moulds or cores are provided with integral wedges which project into the mould core cavity and penetrate into the gap between the ends of the rails or bars to control the spacing between the rails or bars during welding. The moulds or cores enable the rails or bars to be aligned optimally during welding as well as ensuring that the gap between the rail or bar ends is accurately maintained during welding.
