Abstract

The positioning system is used for the magnetic head (4) in a magnetic disc unit, for aligning the head with a reference track (X0, X1) and compensating for dimensional variations caused by variations in the temperature and humidity. A reception circuit (12) supplies a positioning command signals, supplied to a calculation unit (14). The latter receives the output from a device (16) which measures the dimensional variations, for providing a corrected positioning signal in accordance with the latter, supplied to the positioning means (10) for the head (4). The calculation unit (14) may employ a gradient signal representing the linear variation of the error over a given distance to obtain the error correction for the positioning signal.
