Abstract

For packaging commodity articles, in particular slices of ham or the like in vacuum-sealed packs formed from plastic films, each film consists of two layers the inner layer of which has a much lower softening point than the outer layer. The commodity article is arranged between the two films and introduced into a vacuum chamber in which, under reduced pressure, the film material is heated to a temperature at which the inner layers soften. Then air is let into the vacuum chamber causing the heated films to bear against the article and the inner layers of the films to fuse together around the article so that the article is hermetically sealed in.
