Abstract

Cosmetic compsns. having a hydrating action on the external layers of hte skin, contain agents to supply external water, to ensure its passage to the interior layers of skin, and to fix it. Used to prevent excessive water loss from the skin due to wind, cold, heat, etc. The compsns. are usually in the form of an emulsion, the components being as follows: (a) emulsifying agent, esp. 0.5-10% ethoxylated fatty 8-20C alcohols; (b) co-emulsifier, esp. 0.2-10% fatty acid salt or a mineral or organic base; (c) fats, esp. 0.5-30% paraffins, isoparaffins, animal or vegetable oils, fatty esters or triglycerides; (d) emollients, esp. 0.2-20% glycerine, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol ro sorbitol; (e) humectants, esp. 0.05-10% urea, sodium lactate, or amino acids; (f) 20-80% water; (g) perfumes, dyes and preservatives.
