Abstract
A turbine blade has a profiled blade enclosed in an outer sheet n11) of material with suitable temp. and erosion resisting properties. The core has a fir tree root which is inserted in a groove in the rotor and has radial grooves (19) running along it. These are closed by the outer sheet to form radial water cooling passages. A series of helical grooves (41) is cut in the base of each longitudinal groove (19) in the blade. Alternatively inserts forming a helical upstand can be fitted in the longitudinal grooves. This promotes turbulence in the water flow and prevents the Coriolis force limiting the water stream to a part only of the channel surface. It thus improves the heat transfer characteristics.
