Abstract

The vice has a pressure amplifier with a handle (7) rotated on an externally threaded spindle (8) against a spring (9) pushing forwards a sleeve (14) which fits inside the moving jaw (1), and pushing it towards the fixed jaw (2). Inside the moving jaw is a tapered block (21) which forces outwards two balls (22) into a recess each side as it travels inwards, giving the increased pressure. Each recess is at right angles to the central axis of the spindle, and has a tapered entry (23). The sleeve (14) is also mounted on a ring of balls (17) inside the housing (5) carrying the jaws. These are further balls (15) inside the sleeve. The tapered recess forms the joint line between the moving jaw and the fixed housing.
